National Historical Parks Boston Navy Yard Mission is to
‘Interpret the Art and History of Naval Shipbuilding


During the Second World War women fulfilled jobs left by men in naval service. Over 8,000 women worked at the Boston Navy Yard (BNY).

In 1917, two years before the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote the Boston Navy Yard hired civilian women laborers for the first time in its history. 

The USS Mason (DE-529) was commissioned in 1944 with a crew of 160 African-American enlisted and officers. A Evarts-class destroyer escort, provided protection for other naval vessels in the Atlantic Ocean.

Pier 5 saw constant transformation and acted as a hub of National innovation.
